The main goal of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve is to protect the diversity of species it contains in a near-unspoilt natural space which has become the home of certain endangered species.

The Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve came into being with the aim of protecting and maintaining the biological diversity and natural resources of this area, which covers a surface area of 116,160 hectares and is the sixth-largest reserve of this kind in Spain. The Biosphere Reserve includes Monfragüe National Park.

If we contemplate its terrain we can see a central area with lush, shady areas on either side of the Tagus and Tiétar rivers, occupying a surface area of 16,000 hectares, with areas of wilderness that are the best possible representation of Mediterranean scrubland, where holm-oaks, wild olive trees and cork oaks grow, along with leafy undergrowth comprised of bushes. An impenetrable jungle that shelters many species of mammals and is used to nest in by large birds of prey.

But the extensive meadows that surround this reserve also favour the existence of a biodiversity of interest to science, such as the Spanish imperial eagle, an endangered species which has found the ideal breeding ground here. Not in vain does the entire Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve coincide with the SPA of Monfragüe and Dehesas del Entorno, an area with a wealth of ornithological fauna.

Another outstanding feature of the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve is its large population of aromatic plants, which has led to the creation of the Interpretation Centre La Casa de los Aromas (The House of Aromas), designed to bring this great wealth closer to visitors through numerous routes through the area. In addition to these routes there are other hiking trails, prepared for bicycles, and several geological paths which reveal the complex, complete natural treasure represented by this reserve, as you will be able to see in the Casas de Miravete or Toril interpretation centres. The route can be complemented by visiting the several viewing platforms and observatories you will find all around the reserve, as well as the Arrocampo Ornithological Park (Saucedilla) and the Bird Center, in Torrejón el Rubio.
