The Convent of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Palancar, a religious monument representative of the Modern Age, is in the province of Cáceres.
This convent was founded by brother Pedro de Alcántara in 1557 and has now become a place of pilgrimage, meditation and retreat for anyone who wishes to come and discover this special place.
Inside it has some simple cells with wooden beds where the monks sleep, although brother Pedro used to sleep sitting down with his forehead resting on a log.
The architectural site and its interior decoration are characterised by their simplicity and sobriety. The cloister is minimalist, with wooden columns and an inner courtyard. The chapel is decorated with mosaics and a carving of Saint Peter.
Subsequent renovation work has followed the original, simple lines of the convent. The chapel and the new cloister are topped by magnificent vaults.
No visitor can remain indifferent after a visit to the Palancar Convent. Some of the elements that make this place so special are the natural setting it stands in, the austerity transmitted by the wood and the history of its rooms, sculptures, paintings and mosaics.
