  • This natural monument offers visitors beautiful geological formations as well as a gateway to Neolithic times.

The "Cuevas Fuentes de León" Natural Monument is made up of various caves. The first is known as La Cueva de Los Postes (Cave of Posts) due to the crystallised columns that flank the main tunnel. Neolithic bones have been discovered in this small, low cave, along with archaeological remains from Roman times, when this grotto was used as a place of worship. Traces of this occupation can also be found in La Cueva del Caballo (Cave of the Horse) and La Cueva del Agua (Cave of Water).

At the top of a short path lies La Cueva del Caballo, named after a rock formation that resembles a horse's head. This cave houses many fascinating geological formations. There is also a Roman altar, where lamps and pottery have been found.

Nearby lies the entrance to La Cueva Masero, also known as “Bonita” (Beauty). This is the deepest of the caves and the only one where no archaeological remains have been discovered. However, it does boast some amazing geological formations.

La Cueva del Agua is the largest of the caves and a veritable shrine of karst formations. It also a large lake, which converges in a cavern where a colony of bats live, so unfortunately it must remain off-limits to the general public. However, a small platform has been built at the entrance so that visitors can admire the geological structures and the lake.

Last but not least, La Cueva de la Lamparilla (Cave of the Lamp) entices you in to discover geological, archaeological, botanical and faunistic features that make up part of the history and culture of this area of Extremadura in the district of Tentudía.
