This 16th century convent can be found in the town of Alcántara in Cáceres.
Alcántara is home to one of the most beautiful convents in Extremadura. It dates from the 16th century and was abandoned after it was expropriated in 1835. Restoration work was begun in 1966, the work being started by Hidroeléctrica Española and then passed on the Foundation of San Benito de Alcántara.
The exterior of its church, which was finished in 1576, is surprisingly majestic and the triple apse with large coats of arms is a prominent feature. The convent is on the north-east side of this building, the façade is sombre and has a small cloister giving access to the main building. It is square and has two floors, the most prominent element is the Charles V arcade. The Classical Theatre Festival of Alcántara is held each year in this area.* Friendly reminder for your visit:
