A stop along the Silver Way, pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela pass through Calzadilla as they travel along what was formerly the Roman road that linked the north and the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
In south of the province of Badajoz lies the delightful town of Calzadilla de Barros, which belongs to the district of Zafra-Río Bodión.
Its origins go back to Roman times; the remains and archaeological sites found here bear witness to this. Later, Islamic settlers populated this area until, in the age of the Reconquest, Ferdinand III ('The Holy') subordinated Calzadilla to the Order of Santiago. The town's architectural highlights include the Casa de la Encomienda, dating from the 16th century.
Strolling around the streets, you can visit the parish church, dedicated to the Divine Saviour, which is located in the east of the town and has been declared a historical and artistic monument. Inside is one of the most-cherished pieces by the inhabitants of Calzadilla: the church's main altarpiece, a late medieval painting and one of the most important pieces from this period preserved in Extremadura.
On the outskirts of the town we find the 16th-century chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.
