Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark
Ideal if you are travelling with children. Scenery, vegetation, a variety of fauna and a wealth of historical and artistic heritage combine in this natural space.
Villuercas-Jara-Ibores UNESCO Geopark is a natural area in which rocks, minerals and fossils are most remarkable features. Spaces such as Risco de la Villuerca, Apreturas del Almonte, Mina Constanza or Rañas de Cañamero have unique experiences to offer. However, before discovering all this natural beauty, it is advisable to visit the Visitor’s Information Centre in Cañamero, where they will inform you of all the activities that can be carried out to fully enjoy your visit to the Geopark.
The Castañar cave, in Castañar, will leads you deep in the earth to admire how the action of water on limestone has sculpted surprising forms and colours; in fact, this cave is considered one of the most interesting in Spain for its scientific value and its striking beauty. And the Desfiladero del Pedroso allows to admire a water stream perfectly integrated in the granite soil creating rapids and waterfalls.
It is best to explore the Geopark on foot, by bike or in a 4WD vehicle, following routes such as that of Lorera de la Trucha, which goes to the singular tree of the same name, the Alfonso Onceno route, which runs among oak and chestnut trees and the Isabella of Castille route. Alternatively, you can take the Vegas del Guadiana Green Route, which stretches over 50 km between Logrosán and Villanueva de la Serena among rice and corn fields and dehesas. You can also practice vertical tourism by climbing the rocky walls of Las Villuercas, canoe down the Ruecas river and the park geo-sites or take a swim in the Charco de la Nutria in Cañamero or the Presa de Castañar natural pools in Ibor.
