Medellín roman ensemble

This Badajoz city was founded in the year 79 B. C. by the Roman consul Quinto Cecilio Metelo Pío, and it became an important Roman colony, as it was a link between the Silver Way and the routes from Augusta Emerita (Mérida) to Toletum (Toledo) and Corduba (Cordoba).

From that Roman past, the theatre, several villas, ruins of buildings, ceramics, numismatic remains and a mosaic with a geometric theme, from 1st century, found near Las Galapagueras, still remain. All of these remains lead us to think that Medellín must have been the largest town in Extremadura until the current Mérida was founded.

A past that you get to know first-hand at the visitor's centre at the archaeological site, where there are records of this town's passage through the prehistoric and historic periods. This centre is in the Church of Santiago, which is Roman style with Gothic touches, and was built over the old Roman theatre.
