This Cáceres town, the main one in the district of La Vera, is famous for its gastronomic delights.
Jaraíz de la Vera was founded at the beginning of the Middle Ages, though there are indications that it may have been settled in Neolithic times and by the Romans.
Evidence of its cultural heritage can be seen in the town centre as exemplified by the church of Santa María de Altagracia, declared to be a monument of cultural interest, the church of San Miguel Arcángel, the palace of the bishop, Don Juan Domingo Manzano y Carvajal , which nowadays serves as a paprika museum; the stone column or pillory of Santa Ana, the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Salobrar, the chapel of San Cristóbal and the Plaza Mayor, the twin-level ground plan of which is curious to say the least.
Jaraíz has been called the paprika capital of the world, given that a top quality paprika is made here that is greatly valued throughout Spain, and abroad as well.
The natural beauty of the town's surroundings are also worthy of mention, as exemplified by its landscape and the Las Majadillas reservoir, the Las Veguillas stream and the El Lago natural pool. Moreover, its micro-climate favours the growth of unbeatable produce, which you can sample in its diverse gastronomic delights, in which those dishes prepared with paprika take pride of place, not to mention its traditional confectionery, such as the "perrunillas" biscuits and typical cakes like the "floretas", the "huesillos" and the "roscas·. -
