Huddled in the famous La Vera region of Cáceres province, you will be enchanted by Cuacos de Yuste's exuberant landscape and rich cultural heritage.
Declared a Site of Historic and Artistic Interest, this town is a must-see as you travel through Extremadura.
The landscape around the town, watered by the Tiétar river, is a wonderful place to lose yourself, which is what Emperor Carlos V must have thought when he decided to spend his final days here. And so, the legacy of the time he spent here can now be enjoyed by today's visitors.
Yuste Monastery is, without doubt, the first place you should head for. Built in the early 15th century, it was subsequently modified to house the monarch, who arrived in 1556. Today, we can clearly distinguish two parts: the monastery and the Emperor's residence. The monastery mixes Gothic and Renaissance styles, contrasting with the simple, brick, stone and masonry of the imperial residence. The complex is surrounded by carefully tended gardens, where Carlos V found the same peace and quiet that we can enjoy today. With its serene beauty and historic interest, the Monastery of Yuste is both a European and Spanish Heritage Site.
We also recommend that you visit the House of Juan de Austria, home -according to legend- of the Emperor's natural son, and take a stroll through the streets of the town to the porticoed Plaza Mayor and Plaza de España, where you can appreciate the area's unusual architecture. And of course, the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church and its chapels are also not to be missed.
